The player's retrieving play style and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted commentators to wonder if his skill to perform at the highest level was concluded.
However the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to approach the net and compete assertively, supported by an improved serving game.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.
The pair traded break points in the second set before Moutet, striving for his first tour victory, gained dominance to force a final set.
The opponent saved 4 early-game chances in a tight final set before Medvedev won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.
